Tucked away in the southeast region of Brazil, the small municipality of Cristina quietly thrives in the state of Minas Gerais. Here, Fazenda Alta Vista is owned and operated by Robson Vilela. Alta Vista translates to “high view” from Portuguese, which is a fitting name for a farm that sits at about 1200 masl. Since we purchased two different lots of coffee from Alta Vista, this offering is either Yellow Bourbon or Catuai Amarelo, depending on the roast batch. Each variety underwent a pulped natural process, which imparts sweet and citric undertones onto the beans. It also translates to complexity of flavor and a full, round body. In a cup of Carnival Brazil, you’ll taste the sweetness of cocoa and caramel that Brazilian coffees are known for, accented by a citric brightness.
At Alta Vista, which is roughly 120 hectares in size, over 75 hectares of the land is dedicated to growing coffee. The rest of the land is used for growing bananas, which are not only an extra source of income for the farm, but are also beneficial to the coffee trees on the farm. However, it’s not just his crops that Robson takes such good care of—the people who help him operate it are taken care of at Alta Vista as well. It has been Robson’s mission to ensure that his workers are well taken care of, and in order to do so, he keeps a smaller staff than is common in the area.
Carnival is a reason to celebrate, so grab some today and let the festivities begin!
