We are so privileged and lucky to be able to roast and offer this coffee. The flavors are exquisite, but the origins and how the coffee came to be are equally compelling. This coffee comes from a group out of Huila, Colombia called “Mujeres del Huila” (the Women of Huila). This women-led group works to support & celebrate female coffee producers.
Being a woman in the coffee farming industry can be challenging due to various social, economic, and cultural factors like the following:
- Limited Access to Land and Resources: In many coffee-growing regions, women have less access to land ownership and resources compared to men. This limits their ability to invest in and expand their coffee farms.
- Unequal Access to Training and Education due to Cultural Norms and Gender Roles: Women may have limited access to training programs, education, and agricultural resources that could enhance their farming techniques and improve productivity. Societal norms and traditional gender roles can restrict women’s involvement in decision-making processes related to farming. Women often bear the responsibility of household and caregiving duties in addition to their work on the coffee farm. Balancing these responsibilities can be challenging and affect their ability to focus on the farm’s needs. They might have limited participation in community and cooperative activities or face discrimination within the industry.
- Market Access and Fair Pricing: Women farmers may encounter difficulties accessing markets and receiving fair prices for their coffee beans due to their marginalized position in the supply chain.
We believe that empowering women in coffee farming can lead to better economic outcomes for families and communities and improvements in coffee quality and sustainability. As coffee-sourcers, we have the opportunity to “vote with our money” and prioritize buying from women-owned farms and women-led organizations
With many things in life, several minds, several hands, and several creative beings are better than one. Each one of the producers that cultivated and grew these coffees in this offering are, on their own, incredibly talented and have the ability to create a single-origin coffee that is worth writing home about. It is with this partnership we get to put several incredible coffees together to create a delightful cup that can be enjoyed at all times of the day.
Cheers to good coffee, good causes, and good sleep. Grab some friends, grab a mug, and brew up some Brazen Berry to help keep the vibes vibing.
