CoCo Reflections from Silken Buska:
This Week’s CoCo: Speak to the Future, Not to the Past
There are so many ways we can speak to the future which makes this coco so widely available! It is important to look at our past to learn from mistakes but dwelling on them is not going to create more ease or build us up. In general, whenever I focus more on the past and what I would have changed versus what’s in front of me, that’s when more feelings of anxiety and frustration creep in. If I have moments where I’m so focused on something poor that happened, it can lead to bitterness which is never a fun place to be for very long. (In my personal life, when I get in these bitterness ruts, it’s so helpful to be grateful. Practicing gratitude is such an amazing way to help our brains. Which I guess I do as well during stressful rushes when things don’t seem to be going well) Although sometimes out of pride, the feelings of ‘I was right’ get caught up and feel good in the moment but never end up well. This is something I have to catch myself doing at work and in my personal life. Sometimes the intention behind it even is good, but if we let it harbor for too long that’s where problems can arise. We can and should look back on the past but to use those experiences to set our sights moving forward and #speaktothefuture, not the past.
Next Week’s CoCo: Be a Hero, Find a Hero
Nine times out of ten whenever I see this core commitment my brain sings “I need a hero! I’m holding on for a hero till the morning light…” and then as the song continues to play in my brain, I start to dance to it too…. Anyone else…No…? Yes!?…
Any who. It’s so key to support our coworkers by showing them we think they are heroes! I feel there’s two sides of this. One, when you know someone appreciates you, you’re more than happy to come in and help them with something. Show up ready to work and give it your all. When you don’t feel valued, it’s a lot harder to stay motivated and want to show up. I think this is another reason we want to show appreciation for our custies so that they also want to keep coming in!
The other side is trying to out do the heroism. Whenever I want to be the biggest support, I ask myself How can I do that!? How can I try my hardest to serve our customers in our space? How can I support my coach (or whoever you report to) with upcoming scheduling changes I have? It challenges us to think of different ways we can make this work best for all parties involved! Always be on the lookout to call out a hero you see and make customers see our own heroism and to make sure you yourself, #beahero.
CoCo Heroes:
- Speak to the Future, Not to the Past: This Core Commitment Hero comes from the Harwood Cafe Team – Xander S! Xander is really good at learning from past experiences, and using them as opportunities to grow. Xander regularly responds in our group chat with experiences he’s learned from, and offers solutions based on that. He has a super positive attitude, and sees these moments as a chance for growth. He doesn’t get stuck on past experiences.
- Be a Hero, Find a Hero: This Core Commitment Hero comes from the Tosa Blue Cafe Team – Mara R! Mara shows immense care to her team leaders and team members alike. She is willing to pick up extra hours or swap shifts with team members who are seeking coverage. Mara regularly asks the team what she can do to help, whether that be during shift change or during a rush. She looks for opportunities to work ahead and set up the next shift for success. She writes hero cards often to celebrate her team members. Mara’s work puts Stone Creek’s hero culture on display regularly.
