CoCo Reflections from Claire Gorman:
This Week’s CoCo: Be a Hero, Find a Hero
In fourth grade, one of my teacher’s favorite phrases was “do the right thing, even when no one is watching.” She encouraged us to help others in small ways such as offering to open the door for another, to verbally show our appreciation for others, to include those who were being excluded from something, and more. This phrase instilled in me from childhood reminds me of today’s Core Commitment, Be a Hero, Find a Hero. To me, heroes are those who embody doing the right thing, even when no one is watching, no matter how big or small that right thing is. They are those who you may not see on the news, but are working behind the scenes to make their community a better place. They are those who are caretakers for loved ones on top of their already full lives. The coworkers who go out of their way to lighten a burdensome load off their fellow coworkers shoulders. Those who have no material items to give, but still give a smile and an encouraging word. They are those whose jobs we didn’t know existed, but make it possible for us to have our basic needs met. There are so many heroes among us humbly doing the right thing without us even knowing!
Next Week’s CoCo: Take Risks
I’m naturally averse to taking risks; I like to stay comfortable where I’m at and with the people I know, feeling control over my quiet life. However, I know from experience that getting outside of my comfort zone leads to growth. One of the most fruitful areas of my life that I’ve taken risks in is meeting new people.
As a very shy child and still somewhat shy adult, I do not often go out of my way to meet new friends, and every time I do, putting myself out there feels like a risk. My first memory of taking a risk to meet someone new was from my first week of preschool. I didn’t know anyone yet, so I boldly approached my teacher and asked her to help me make a friend. She introduced me to another classmate, and we became fast friends. I met my college best friend by taking a risk and asking her to hang out after meeting only briefly at an organization we were both a part of. I met my boyfriend by taking yet another risk in introducing myself to him after our first choir practice.
In each of these situations, I remember feeling so strongly that I had to reach out and get to know each of these people. In taking calculated risks, I think trusting your gut can guide you just as much as weighing the practical pros and cons can. All of these relationships have played such an important role in my life, and I’m so grateful for each of them and for trusting myself enough to risk my comfort and the possibility of rejection and failure. You never know who you could be, where you could go, and who you could meet by taking risks!

Brewing Change – Dressember: Stone Creek Coffee is excited to be supporting Silken, a Wauwatosa Cafe baristas, and Celeste Bayer, the Employee Care Specialist, in their Brewing Change initiative for the 4th year! During the month of December, Silken, Celeste, and others will be participating in Dressember. This movement is now a global event where you commit to wearing a dress or tie everyday in the month of December. The power of this small consistent action shows the force of every day advocacy to help bring the much needed awareness and finances to fight against human trafficking. On Wednesday, December 6th, Stone Creek donated $1 to this Dressember group, for every pound of coffee sold in our cafes and at stonecreekcoffee.com.
