You’re probably wondering, what is Wush Wush and why is so special?
Wushwush is actually a relatively small area in the Keffa region of Ethiopia. It was here that in 1975, what is now known as the Wush Wush variety was discovered. This variety, which is still rare and difficult to come by almost 50 years later, is truly like no variety that I’ve tasted before, even as someone who has been cupping for nearly 7 years!
Wush Wush shares the same phenotype as the coveted Gesha variety, and because of this, has truly stunning floral, delicate attributes. Yet paradoxically, the Wush Wush offerings that I’ve cupped are some of the fruitiest, juiciest coffees I’ve encountered, whether they’re washed or natural processed. Though natural processing surely ramps up the sweetness and fruitiness of the Wush Wush, the variety itself is intrinsically fruity, and does not need intense femernation to showcase it. That being said, the natural Wush Wush that we’re launching later this week is one of my favorite naturals and the best Wush Wush that I’ve tried of all time.
Our Wush Wush Natural comes to us from Marcela Castellanos via our partners at Cofinet in Colombia and is truly one of a kind. This coffee was grown on Marcela and her husband’s farm, Cristales, in Armenia, Quindío, Colombia at 1450-1600 masl. The natural processing method that Marcela chose for her Wush Wush was taken to just the right spot in fermentation, where fruitiness and juiciness work in perfect harmony to wow your taste buds. It yields a truly divine cup that was produced by an incredibly wonderful woman.
This coffee stands as one of the last lots Marcela produced before she passed away, and we’re truly honored to share the fruits of her labor with you. To those that knew her, Marcela was not only a great coffee producer, but also did an incredible job at sharing her knowledge and skills with compassion. Though Marcela’s husband continues her legacy on their farm, Marcela will not be forgotten.
