As you can tell from the name, this is one fruity coffee. It’s not too often that we have a small batch from Rwanda, so we’re happy to have this coffee in house. Coffee plays a major role in the economy of Rwanda, as the annual quantity produced is around 21,000 metric tons. There are around 400,000 smallholder producers that utilize communal washing stations to streamline their process. The most common varieties are Caturra, Catuai, and Bourbon and coffee is generally wet-processed (or washed). The growing season in Rwanda is September and October and harvest is between March and July. Now that you know a little more about coffee production in Rwanda, let’s meet our newest coffee — Passion Fruit Rwanda.
Some things are cultivated with care, others, with passion. This special offering from Rwanda is a treat brought to us directly from the 342 farmers of the Kinini Co-op with the help of Crop to Cup. “Kinini” means, literally, ‘this big thing right here’. Kinini is also the name of a washing station and cooperative located in Kinini, Rwanda which collects from the neighboring villages of Tumba and Mageragere. 85% of the members are women, which makes this innovative group even more remarkable. Passion Fruit Rwanda is a fully washed lot of Bourbon from the Kinini Co-op, and it’s so tasty, that it’s something to be passionate about.
10 years after starting a school for children of genocide in Rwanda, and with no knowledge about coffee other than that the Rwandan government was supporting a transition towards specialty coffee, Jacquie Turner and Malcolm Clear wanted to find a way to have generational impact on communities without having to continually fundraise $ for aid projects. Today, their coffees score 87+ on average, which is no small feat for novices or masters alike, and are a testament to the power of passion.
With sweet notes of marshmallow and bubblegum paired with the complex acidity of passion fruit, lemon-lime, and orange, Passion Fruit is something special from Rwanda that’s best shared with the one you love.
