MASTER EVERY BREW METHOD

ESPRESSO

DIAL IT IN

Espresso makes a bold, concentrated cup with plenty of room to experiment. Light roasts bring out complex, nuanced flavors, while medium roasts offer balanced sweetness with notes of caramel, chocolate, and fruit—great for lattes and other milk drinks. Dark roasts deliver deeper flavors like cocoa and toasted nuts.

STEP 1: EQUIPMENT PREP

Ensure your espresso machine is on, filled with filtered water, and has plenty of time to preheat. Machines vary greatly on heatup time based on their type. Check the manual for proper guidance.

STEP 2: PUCK PREP

Remove the portafilter and use a towel to ensure it is dry. Using a scale, dose 17 g of freshly ground coffee into the portafilter. Tap the side to settle the bed of grounds. Tamp to compress the bed of coffee.

STEP 3: BREW (0:25-0:30)

Place a small cup on a scale and place both directly under the portafilter. Start the timer and begin the brew cycle. Aim for 34 g total on your scale, stopping the machine slightly early to allow the remaining liquid to flow through and finish at the goal weight. Stop your timer whenever you stop the shot; the sweet spot is usually 25-30 seconds.

STEP 4: STIR & SERVE

Espresso pulls in layers of varying density, so mix with a spoon before drinking. Depending on how quickly or slowly the shot pulled and how it tastes, take a note to make any necessary adjustments for your next pull. While these guidelines are a great starting point, there is a lot of room to play with those variables. Enjoy the journey.
