Kilimbi Washing Station was established in March 2016 by Muraho Trading Company. The first coffee washing station, Muraho trading company ever built. This washing station is located on the shores of lake Kivu – the biggest lake in Rwanda – in the western part of Rwanda. This station is the first in Rwanda to successfully produce black and red honey-processed coffee and was also, together with Rugali, legally allowed by the government of Rwanda to produce honey and natural coffees. Some cherries come by boat from farmers through lake Kivu. Kilimbi has won many awards, and the coffees processed at this station have been used in both regional and international barista competitions.
This washing station has substantially supported farmers to get quality seedlings to improve farmers’ production, and WS staff provide agriculture skills and techniques to smallholders. In addition to helping farmers’ businesses, the station offers health care insurance for all its farmers, which is always a challenge for smallholder farmers in Rwanda.
Only the ripest and highest Brix reading cherries were selected to intensify the natural flavors to become richer than standard coffee or any other coffee processed differently. Coffee cherries were kept in closed tanks without oxygen for 72 hours. Then cherries were carefully dried on African raised beds for six weeks.
