Suke Quto Farm, located in the Guji region of Ethiopia, is a pioneering coffee farm founded by Tesfaye Bekele, a visionary who played a crucial role in establishing Guji as a renowned specialty coffee origin. Born into a coffee-producing family, Tesfaye initially distanced himself from coffee farming due to its labor-intensive nature. However, after working in environmental protection and witnessing the devastation caused by bushfires in the late 1990s, he returned to his roots with a mission to restore the land and provide sustainable livelihoods for the Guji community. Tesfaye introduced coffee farming as an alternative to traditional crops, distributing seedlings and eventually establishing Suke Quto Farm. His dedication to reforestation and coffee cultivation not only revitalized the region but also inspired a wave of coffee farming across Guji, making Suke Quto a symbol of innovation and sustainability.
At the heart of Suke Quto Farm’s success is its meticulous coffee processing methods. The farm operates a washing and drying station where both washed and natural coffees are produced. For washed coffees, cherries are pulped using an Agared machine, which removes the skin but leaves the mucilage intact. The beans are then fermented for 35-48 hours, depending on weather conditions, before being washed and dried. Natural coffees are dried on elevated beds for 9 to 15 days, allowing the cherries to dry slowly and develop complex flavors.
The farm prioritizes environmentally friendly practices, including organic recycling and wastewater management through three lagoons. These methods, combined with the fertile volcanic soil and high-altitude growing conditions, result in coffees that are Organic and Rainforest Alliance certified, celebrated for their exceptional quality and unique flavor profiles.
Tesfaye’s commitment extends beyond coffee production to community development and environmental stewardship. He collaborates with 171 outgrowers, providing them with resources and training to ensure high-quality cherry production. Additionally, Tesfaye has initiated projects to improve local infrastructure, including building a new school in the neighboring village of Kurume. His partnership with Trabocca, a global coffee distributor, has further elevated Suke Quto’s reputation, with Trabocca supporting organic certification and quality control. Through his innovative approach and dedication to sustainability, Tesfaye has not only transformed Suke Quto into a model coffee farm but also empowered the Guji community, proving that coffee can be a force for economic growth and environmental preservation.
