Farm to Cup Story
When talking about Rwanda, it’s difficult to ignore the sordid political history of the recent past. Thanks to the perseverance and strength of the Rwandan people, Rwanda is on an upswing, which is why we decided to call this offering First Light. This lot is 100% Bourbon Sub-varieties that were fully washed. In a cup of First Light, you’ll experience a delicate body paired with explosive acidity and sweetness to match.
The lot, Musasa Ruli Lot 40, that is used in First Light bears with it an especially promising story. This Fair Trade offering was sourced from the Musasa mill, which is run by the award-winning Dukunde Kawa Cooperative. The cooperative began in 2000 with just one wet mill for farmers to bring their cherries to process. In the years since, they have built three more wet mills, as well as their own dry mill. More than 80% of the cooperative’s workforce is women, and the producers have used their earnings to improve their living standards by investing in livestock, creating access to healthcare, and pioneering programs which protect their environment. In fact, in 2012, Dukunde Kawa was awarded the SCAA Sustainability Award for their environmental work. Dukunde Kawa’s coffees have been internationally recognized by placing as one of the best in the Cup of Excellence each year.
Support the Rwandan people, and enjoy First Light before it’s gone.
