Apollo 11 Nicaragua
Apollo 11 Nicaragua

When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon on July 20th, 1969, it was not only one small step for man, but a giant leap for all of humankind that would change history forever. The moon landing was something that we, as a global community, could come together and get excited about and share. It was a human achievement that transcended national barriers. John Mark La Rue’s father named his first Nicaraguan coffee farm Apolo 11 over 40 years ago in honor of this monumental mission. Today, we’ve brought you coffee from the La Rue’s farm to commemorate the 48th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Apollo 11 is a stellar offering that features a subtle body and rich sweetness that pairs perfectly with an out-of-this-world acidity reminiscent of lemon-lime, tart strawberries, and black currant.

Farm to Cup Story

This offering is brought to you from the Apolo 11 farm in the Jinotega department of Nicaragua. Originally owned by John Mark La Rue Palacios’s father, the farm was named after the inspirational Apollo moon missions. The farm is named Apolo 11 (Spanish), rather than Apollo 11, so that it is pronounced correctly when read phonetically (double l’s = Apoyo). Ever since John Mark’s father passed Apolo 11 down to him, he has been working on making the farm a viable, sustainable specialty coffee farm. This fully-washed offering from Apolo 11 has a subtle body that pairs well with the rich sweetness of dates and sugar cane and a complex acidity reminiscent of lemon-lime, tart strawberries, and black currant.

At the Apolo 11 farm, John Mark’s efforts to improve the conditions on his farm are self-evident. Guaba fruit trees are planted to help shade the coffee plants. Plants are thoughtfully planted in navigable rows.  Chemical inputs are kept to a minimum, and waste is managed responsibly. Like the missions it was named after, Apolo 11 is on the forefront of bringing coffee farming into the future through sustainability. Apolo 11 was recently Rainforest Alliance certified, confirming their commitment to the environment and setting standards for care. We are lucky to work with such great partners.
