CORE COMMITMENT REFLECTION FROM PAYSON EAST
This Week’s CoCo: Speak to the Future, Not to the Past
Thinking about this core commitment, what comes to mind is how we deal with “pain points.” These are moments or ongoing strings of moments that challenge us with negative thoughts and feelings. It can come in the form of ornery customers, miscommunication with coworkers, schedule goofs, etc. These situations can be hard. What ends up happening is we get caught up with real feelings from real issues regarding these pain points. These cause us to dwell on what has happened and if we are not careful, we get swept away into a past oriented mindset. “I can’t do this because I’ve failed at it every time I try it,” “they did not hear me last time, so why speak up?” and “This shift will be terrible because ‘John Doe’ customer is hard to deal with” are all hard situations, but I think the best way to deal with them and heal from these pain points is reorienting our thoughts to a future speaking mindset. By doing this, we move away from the hurt of the problem and seek a solution to resolve it. I have found what works best for me is mentally saying “Okay. What happened happened. What can I do with this now?” It is through this that I am now in a mindset focused on resolution, and not only the hurt of the moment. The sooner we can move forward and learn from the past, the quicker we grow and flourish.
Next Week’s CoCo: Be a Hero, Find a Hero
Every time this CoCo comes around I get excited. Mostly because it helps us recognize all the cool things we and our coworkers do! It is so important to call out heroic deeds in our job because it cultivates an atmosphere of recognition and praise that makes people actually want to come to work! To me, that is crucial because we spend a majority of our waking hours at our jobs, and if that’s the case, we might as well enjoy the work. I think most of our self-fulfillment comes not from the work we do, but the atmosphere and relationships we cultivate within our work. We have a direct role in creating a place that people WANT to work at. How? By being absolute certified crushers who are not afraid to praise the mutual awesomeness of the people around them.
Whenever a tough situation is turned around by a coworker stepping up, we are left feeling relieved and thankful that we have them on our team. This CoCo is the perfect reminder to shout them out and show them just how awesome they are! This then makes them feel MORE awesome, and perpetuates an atmosphere of people who encourage and support each other. This then produces a job that people actually love doing, and again, since we are doing this whole work thing pretty often, we might as well love doing it. So, for this week, I encourage you all to be a hero, and also to shout out each other and find ways to praise each other! Write recognitions, give them a high five, tell your regulars! Let’s make Stone Creek a place where we can show up and look forward to being a hero and loving what we do, and working alongside heroes who love what they do.
