CORE COMMITMENT REFLECTION FROM PAYSON EAST
About Payson: Greetings, everyone! For those of you who do not know me: my name is Payson East and I am the Cafe Coach of the Oconomowoc location. I have worked for Stone Creek for about 9 years, working as a barista, master barista, educator, and then finally Cafe Coach. Coffee has been a passion throughout this job that has not diminished, and I find myself humbled to be able to work alongside such amazing coffee geeks! I want to start off by saying that I am excited to walk this quarter of the year with y’all by sharing my thoughts, experiences and (maybe) some small amount of wisdom while reflecting on our company’s Core Commitments. These are integral to not only our company, as they shape every aspect of our job, but also our lives, as each Core Commitment presses on key parts of our lives. These may not be a comprehensive list on every right and noble thing, but if used correctly, they will be a wonderful foundation to build a structure of work and life that will last. With that said, let us dive into our first Coco!
This Week’s CoCo: Keep Your Commitments
This Commitment rightly starts the foundation, as it acts as the lynchpin of everything to follow. Without keeping your commitments, we are left with a vaporous grasp on life. Commitments bind our steps and tell us what we want our lives to be like. They start with commitments made to oneself: “I will treat others with respect” “I will get up early tomorrow” or “I will make myself a DELICIOUS sandwich!” These and so many more make up who we are as humans. Commitments also make up who we are to others. We give our word to others that we will act in such ways that align with our work, life, and personal convictions. If we cannot work to uphold these commitments, then who we are as people corrodes and stales. It is a scary yet amazing thing: A simple part of ourselves – a word, a commitment – when in tandem with our efforts to uphold it, produces the image of who people see us to be. More than anything, people will see the true self by observing the words they say, and the things they do. When this is exercised, it is amazing how much assurance and peace floods through oneself. So, to start this quarter out, I encourage everyone to work to keep your commitments!
Next Week’s CoCo: Think Hard
Welcome back, gang! In thinking about…Thinking hard, I observed something in my life: I do not inherently WANT to think hard. If I am not careful, my thoughts flow to that of ease, comfort, and monotony. This may work in the short term, but in the long term I am left with distaste and restlessness in my heart. I see a tension at work. One side pleads for the easy path, which sticks to familiarity and straight roads, and the other side pleads to break free of the prison of stagnant paths. In order for us to better ourselves, I believe that working towards new paths and thoughts is essential. Do not mistake me though: there is no inherent wrong with relaxing and falling to what we know is safe. One’s own home may be thought of as a safe place; a place that keeps the cold, fierce winter from overcoming us. However, one cannot only ever remain in their house or else they will feel isolated and bound. They must go outside, explore around and find what this life truly offers! So it is with our thoughts. If we only ever stick to what is safe and known, we will never flex our sphere of influence and find new joys to engage in. In our work, this is found by thinking of new ways of doing things, like how to sell gift cards, how to better organize the cafe, how to work out a schedule of work that better fits your life, and what path you see yourself walking down in relation to this company. These are thoughts that can be scary – Figuring out if this job was a career opportunity or simply a stepping stone for me brought anxiety to think about – but it is necessary to “brave the cold” and think about new paths for your job (and your life). Start small, but know that once you commit to thinking hard and breaking up monotony, you will find your life a lot more fulfilling and interesting. Now, I am off to think hard myself: What do I write about for the rest of these Core Commitments… Stay tuned!
