CORE COMMITMENT REFLECTION FROM CHRIS CHAPMAN
This Week’s CoCo: Never Stop Learning
In April of this year, I had the opportunity to go to the Specialty Coffee Association Expo in Chicago with some SCC folks. It was a ton of fun and there were so many things to learn about and people to talk to. It was also pretty overwhelming. I like to pride myself on my coffee geekery most of the time, but this event was a great reminder that the world of coffee is so big and continues to grow. It can be easy to get stuck in what we do for coffee (which is a lot!) that you forget there are people always pushing and experimenting, who also embody that never stop learning mindset we strive for. I also think the further I’ve gotten away from being in school the easier it is to stop seeking out new things to learn about. So I’m glad we have made this a core commitment. This past quarter, I’ve really wanted to learn more about different kinds of coffee or different brew methods, so I’ve been reading a bit from the Barista Magazine I’m subscribed to. There was one article called, “Inclusivity in Coffee,” about a roaster in Chicago that specializes in Asian grown, robusta coffee. I know nothing about robusta at all, but I’m excited to make my way to this coffee shop at some point to try it. I also read an article about the growing popularity of decaf (titled “Deconstructing Decaf”), which led me down a rabbit hole to learn more about how coffee becomes decaffeinated, which (of course), led me to a James Hoffman video. I think learning new things is so fun and important. It doesn’t have to be about coffee. Just pick something you love and find a way to engage with it in a different way!
CORE COMMITMENT REFLECTION FROM MADDI CONWAY
About Maddi: Hi! I’m Maddi Conway and I am the Production Fulfillment Manager. I’ve been with Stone Creek Coffee for 5 years. I started as a barista in Bay View (RIP), then transferred to Shorewood and became Spec Ops. Outside of the coffee world, I work as an actor! You can find a few of my films on Amazon and Apple TV, as well as in local festivals. I love reading, discussing reality tv, and guessing people’s astrological signs.
Next Week’s CoCo: Keep Your Commitments
No. As a recovering people pleaser, learning how to say no has been a crucial part of keeping my commitments. When I was younger, I said yes to EVERYTHING. Can you pick up this shift? Yes. Can you actually film on this day instead of the day we booked you for? Yes. Can you watch my dog? Duh!
Saying yes to everything meant I was overcommitting and often underperforming because I couldn’t always honor my word. I wanted to say yes to everything but sometimes my yes was flaky! Keeping our Commitments means we do what we say we are going to do, when we say we are going to do it. When we Keep our Commitments it helps us build trust with others, which starts by being honest with ourselves. Now before making a commitment, I take a quick assessment before jumping to say yes. Is this something I can easily say yes to? Do I need to make a compromise? Or is this something I can’t do, and need to work to find a different solution?
CORE COMMITMENT HEROES
Never Stop Learning: This Core Commitment Hero comes from Delafield – Tricia K! Tricia is always eager and looking to take steps to continue her learning and growth with SCC. Tricia is currently a Master Barista at Delafield and has recently started her training to become Ops Specialist. Tricia is also an excellent facilitator of the NSL attitude for our team. She is constantly offering shots of espresso or samples of COD to taste and discuss with the team.
Keep Your Commitments: This Core Commitment Hero comes from the Factory – Brianna! Brianna always keeps her commitments. She takes a lot of care when processing the commitments she has decided to own, often following up with clarifying questions. Brianna has a great handle on her role as a veteran barista, and includes the team in good commitment keeping as well. She will ask for help with commitments and ensure to follow up and see that they have been kept, aiding in the overall growth of commitment keeping on the factory team. Keep up the great work Brianna!
