CoCo Reflections from Chris Chapman:
This Week’s CoCo: Speak to the Future, Not to the Past
One of my favorite moments from the show Ted Lasso is when Ted, a soccer coach, tells one of his players, Sam, “Be a goldfish,” after he kept making mistakes. The idea was that goldfish have really short-term memories (something I have learned has been debunked, but the point still stands), and if Sam could be more like a goldfish he could focus on the next play, not what happened earlier. I often heard some form of this idea when I was playing sports throughout my life. For me, it can be hard to get out of my own head once I’ve had something go wrong. This definitely applies to my role here at SCC. If I tell a customer wrong information or handle a conversation with a co-worker with less care or attention than I intend to, it bothers me. But the best thing I can do is learn from my mistakes and try to do better next time. Dwelling on what went wrong only hurts you. So, next time something goes wrong (whether it’s your fault or not), be a goldfish. Focus on what’s coming next instead of what’s already done.
Next Week’s CoCo: Be a Hero, Find a Hero
I think Marvel movies may have really skewed what we think of when we think of heroes. It’s so easy to imagine these larger than life characters, but I think of more ordinary moments when I think of heroes. I think of my parents driving hours to come to every sporting event I ever participated in (even if I was injured). I think of my grandpa coming to tow my car out of a ditch after I slipped off the road during winter. I think of my girlfriend (now wife) ordering a pizza for me after I didn’t get a job I really wanted. It’s just people doing what they can to help and support me when they’re able to. Sometimes we’re able to do a really big gesture to be a hero for someone, but I think it’s more likely that you do something small to help someone out. Those little moments help build trust with your co-workers. Maybe it’s picking up a shift for them. Maybe it’s helping them pour a tulip a little better. Maybe it’s finding time to sit with them after your shift so you can talk about something. It might just be showing some kindness when you could show annoyance. There’s so many little ways to be a hero to someone, and those little moments will have a much bigger impact than you expect. So how can you show up for someone this week and be a hero?
CoCo Heroes:
-
Speak to the Future, Not to the Past: This Core Commitment Hero comes from the Kitchen – Annaliese & our Kitchen Managers – Aaron, Cameron and Jaalah! These leaders and their team members are always seeking ways to deliver new or improved experiences for our coworkers and customers. With each challenge, these remarkable individuals pursue the lessons and learning necessary for us to speak (and work) to the future, not to the past. Big thanks to Annaliese, Aaron, Cameron and Jaalah for your commitment to keeping our Kitchen Teams moving forward!
- Be a Hero, Find a Hero: This Core Commitment Hero comes from Retail Team – SHOUT OUT to our very own Patrick Colbourn, MCC extraordinaire! PC regularly shouts out his team members and coworkers, and is the GOAT in terms of being a hero for others — whether it’s helping out a coworker or team leader when they’re in a jam, or supporting our leaders with unique scheduling challenges. Patrick also prioritizes this CoCo in terms of cultural development with every team he works with. Thanks Patrick for being an epic hero, and always taking the time and care to find heroes among us!

COFFEE GEEK ALERT – CAFE WDT TOOLS!
Exciting news! In response to employee feedback, our Education Team will be distributing a Weiss Distribution Technique (WDT) tool to all cafes this week!
WDT Tools are utilized, typically in place of the distribution tool, in order to agitate the espresso grounds, breaking up any clumps of grounds, in support of a clean espresso extraction.
How are these tools used?
The WDT tool is intended to be used in lieu of the distribution step. First begin by hand leveling/setting your grounds as usual, then take the WDT tool and rake through your grounds starting at the bottom going in circular motions, raking upwards until you have reached the top of your grounds. This breaks up any clumps, creating a more fluffy consistency. This will help with creating a more even extraction and decreasing the opportunity of channeling. Then settle or tap your portafilter on your tamp mat and tamp as usual. Here is video for reference!
Please note: These tools are not required to be used, and should not be used in place of the distribution tool as part of our normal workflow. These are available for you to use in the space and play with when pulling seasonal or GBE espresso shots on your own or during slower times. Please be mindful not to use this tool during rushes or higher volume times, even if you’re pulling espresso shots for a customer.
Otherwise, feel free to play around with the WDT tool if you are interested in doing so when time allows and have fun!
P.S. Be careful – the needles are sharp!
Brewing Change – Bike4Friendship Impact
Bike4Friendship is a cycling adventure and fundraiser for Friendship Circle. This event aims to raise $160,000 to support a cause that creates friendship, skills, and inclusion for people with disabilities. Stone Creek Coffee assembled a group of coffee geeks lead by Claire, a Glendale barista, to volunteer at the event to help set up and run one of the rest stations. SCC donated cold brew for the riders at the rest stop and a “BrewGooder” box for the silent auction.
Thank you to everyone who participated and volunteered – you rock!
Keep an eye out for future volunteer opportunities with SCC!
