This coffee is a first for us, as it is a rare varietal. Acawa is a newer variety that is known for being resistant to pests, such as coffee rust. Coffee rust is a browning of the coffee plant leaves that is a disease caused by a fungus. Coffee rust is devastating to the crop, so coffee farmers often look for varietals that are resistant to such loss. Acawa is a favorable variety that presents useful morphological characteristics to the sustainable farming conditions of Ecuador. We’re excited to have this rare coffee in-house to share with you.
Mary and her husband, Victor Granda, proudly produce organically grown coffee in the highlands of the municipality of Puyango in Loja. Mary has been related to coffee ever since she can remember, and she has been involved in the production since she can walk. As a child, coffee was the region’s main economic activity, and her parents were dedicated to the production of coffee. Mary inherited from her parents this coffee culture and passion for the product. “When I was young, I used to help my parents, and I started owning a few coffee trees when I was 15. A few years later, I got married, and with my husband, we decided to follow our parents’ steps, own a farm, and grow coffee,” remembers Mary. The farm is called Granda in honor of her father-in-law and their family name.
It wasn’t until 2019, when our partners at Caravela first visited Mary’s farm, that she realized her special. “It was when Caravela gave me the cupping results for my coffee. This was a life changer for me as I suddenly realized that my coffee was worth more money. For over 15 years, I sold my coffee as commercial to merchants. With these new prices, we have been able to improve the quality of life of my family,” says Mary. She even remembers when their neighbors told them that they could not have high-quality coffee, that their soil was not good, and that the land was poor for great coffee. Now, they are producing high-quality coffee and improving harvest after harvest. Her fam has improved since then, making Mary proud to grow coffee organically and take special care of the soil and environment.
Finca Granda is the home to five people, Mary, Victor, and their three children. They all work together, diving the responsibilities of their farm, and aiming towards the same objective of producing amazing coffee. As a coffee producer, Mary makes a ton of effort to achieve great quality coffee. You will always receive organically produced coffee from her side because she believes that’s how we all care for each other and the planet.
