Unicornucopia was reborn for 2022 as an exquisite Ethiopian coffee. This iteration of the legend delivers all the complexity craved by uber geeks while maintaining an accessibility that’ll please everyone you host for Thanksgiving. It hails from the Abana Coffee Estate, which is a 300-hectare farm and social business started by the Omran family, in 2009, in the Gera area of Limu, Ethiopia. Abana translates to “our fathers” in Arabic, where the name pays homage to the deep roots and heritage of the coffee that traces back centuries to Ethiopia. While several factors play a role in sustainably producing specialty coffee, Abana quickly found that the quality of the coffee improved by prioritizing the people, environment, and community.
Abana supports about 100 kids in the area for schooling (32 live on the farm), hosts several infrastructure development and medical projects, provides electricity for the villages around, and donates tens of thousands of seedlings each year to small local farmers. Abana pays fair wages to all their partners, including the educational development of the workers on their farm. Abana has won eco-friendly awards for how they manage waste, not deforest, and minimize water usage.
Unicornucopia is one of Abana’s Sulladjah lots and has what we consider to be the traditional crisp Ethiopian profile. Sulladjah is the name given to the highest part of the farm, where a community of people live. It has a dense forest and a natural freshwater spring that emerges straight from the mountainside. Although Sulladjah is a location, these lots are a combination of coffees from many areas of the estate. All Abana’s coffees are grown and processed at their estate. Each lot is sorted by hand multiple times and processed with attention to detail before milling in Addis Ababa. All sorting and milling are completed to Grade 1 to less than 1% defect.
This mythical beast of a washed-process coffee will be a great companion to carry you through brisk mornings and complicated family gatherings. It’s bringing with it a cup profile popping with brown sugar, plums, and dried cranberries. May the magic of the horn be with you.
To add even more magic to your morning, why don’t you add our Unicorn Pegasus Mug and new Little Dipper Rainbow Cupping Spoon to your cart. Embark on a fantastical journey when you pour Unicornucopia in this 16oz masterpiece. And use this colorful spoon to cup your coffee like a coffee geek or eat your morning cereal, we aren’t judging.
