CoCo Reflection from Michael Marchant:
This Week’s CoCo: Never Stop Learning
Last one and I’m going to be lazy and post a big, long quote. HA!
I was recently reminded of the excellent album by Jon Hopkins, Music For Psychedelic Therapy, and I highly recommend it if you’re in the mood for something meditative. The final track called “Sit Around the Fire” features a recording of a talk given by Ram Dass in the 1970’s with improvised piano from Jon Hopkins. It’s strikingly beautiful and to me it emphasizes the true importance of wonderment.
“Beyond all polarities, I am
Let the judgments and opinions of the mind
Be judgments and opinions of the mind
And you exist behind that
Ahh so, ahh so
It’s really time for you to see through
The absurdity of your own predicament
You aren’t who you thought you were
You just aren’t that person
And in this very lifetime you can know it
Right now
The real work you have to do
Is in the privacy of your own heart
All of the external forms are lovely
But the real work
Is your inner connection
If you’re quiet when you meditate
If you truly open your heart
Just quiet your mind
Open your heart
Quiet the mind, open the heart
How do you quiet the mind? You meditate
How do you open the heart?
You start to love that which you can love
And just keep expanding it
You love a tree
You love a river
You love a leaf
You love a flower
You love a cat
You love a human
But go deeper and deeper into that love
‘Til you love that
Which is the source of the light behind all of it
Behind all of it
You don’t worship the gate
You go into the inner temple
Everything in you that you don’t need
You can let go of
You don’t need loneliness
For you couldn’t possibly be alone
You don’t need greed
Because you already have it all
You don’t need doubt
Because you already know
The confusion is saying
“I don’t know”
But the minute you are quiet
You find out that in truth you do know
For in you, you know
Plane after plane will open to you
I want to know who I really am
As if in each of us
There once was a fire
And for some of us
There seem as if there are only ashes now
But when we dig in the ashes
We find one ember
And very gently we fan that ember
Blow on it, it gets brighter
And from that ember we rebuild the fire
Only thing that’s important is that ember
That’s what you and I are here to celebrate
That though we’ve lived our life totally involved in the world
We know—
We know that we’re of the spirit
The ember gets stronger
Flame starts to flicker a bit
And pretty soon you realize that all we’re going to do for eternity
Is sit around the fire”
CoCo Reflection from Celeste Bayer:
Next Week’s CoCo: Keep Your Commitments
Hello everyone, I am excited to share my thoughts with you over the next 13 weeks! For those of you who do not know me, I am Celeste and I joined the SCC team in 2017! I am the Employee Care Coordinator, as well as a Master Barista at our Oconomowoc Cafe. Other than coffee, I like traveling and exploring new places, eating and learning about nutrition, and anything outdoors (besides running to run). Here are my thoughts on Keep Your Commitments.
As a person who likes to over commit myself, this is a tough one and has been one I continue to work on in my personal and professional life. This commitment is one of the simplest, but hardest to execute in my opinion. I have learned that to keep your commitments, sometimes you have to not make any. Sounds kind of funny, but I guess that is my way of saying you need to say no sometimes. We all have responsibilities and things that we need to do, that will never change. I remember thinking in high school that once I graduate, stop playing sports competitively, and performing in musicals, I will have more time for “blank” or be able to do “blank” because I have the time. As I enter my adult life and do full time work, University, and plan a wedding, I understand that time and commitments do not work that way. This is why keeping your commitments clear and understanding what you can and can’t do is so important. There will always be more we can do and sometimes we have to pick and choose. I think that keeping your commitments is the first Core Commitment because it is the center of all the other commitments. If we can learn to keep our commitments to ourselves, to each other, and to the company then the rest of the Core Commitments will lay on a solid foundation.
CoCo Heroes:
- Never Stop Learning: This Core Commitment Hero comes from the Oconomowoc Cafe – Makayla Drutowski! She is the epitome of Never Stop Learning! Right when she started at Stone Creek, she was eager to learn more with our EDU team and to get certified, and went all in with getting familiar with our coffee roasts and espresso offerings. She received her Master Barista Certification after being at Stone Creek for about four months as well, and passed with flying colors! She perfected her pours and practiced a ton to compete in our TNT in July! Makayla is constantly getting her team members involved by starting conversations about Seasonal Espresso, what’s on drip, and tasting dial in. Her contagious excitement about coffee and NSL spirit is out of this world!
- Keep Your Commitments: This Core Commitment Hero comes from the Glendale Cafe – Vanessa Van Den Elzen! She is always keeping her commitments by updating our team whiteboard with upcoming launches, and is always the first one to identify and attack needed cleaning tasks that fall between the weekly and deep cleaning checklist!
Coffee Talk: Black Sheep
- What’s in this coffee?
- Nicaragua Medium (50%), Brazil “French” (40%), and Costa Rica Light (10%)
- How long has this been the composition?/What coffee was in here previously?
- Since May of 2022
- We previously had a Medium Colombia in place of Medium Nicaragua.
- How does this roast affect the flavor experience?
- The Nicaragua medium brings sweet cocoa notes and a round body, whereas the French Brazil brings some smokiness and carbon, and the light roasted Costa Rica brings a touch of acidity.
- Why does it have this name?
-
It’s a dark that wants to be light. It has enough fruit and acidity to make a dynamic cup while also having enough carbon to appeal to dark roast lovers.

- “Hello! My name is Abby and some of you may know me as I was recently the traveling barista for the summer, the Lake Country cafes are now my home. This October I wanted to encourage you all as the months get colder and darker to come together and bring more awareness to suicide prevention by either joining our team to walk in the Milwaukee Out of Darkness Community Walk or by financially donating and supporting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. A lot of us have been closely impacted by suicide and this is a great way to bring awareness and support!”
