Hey Coffee People,
I hope you all are doing well as we begin to transition into the fall season. This week I had a meeting with someone who asked about my coffee journey. Those are always fun conversations. It’s fun to reminisce about where we came from and what we’ve been through, but as I reflected on the question, I was even more stoked on where we’re going.
We’ve been leaning into listening and learning. We’re eager to play a productive role in our community. We endeavor to be the kind of place where people can find unity in the midst of growing societal division. While I look forward to the coffees we will source in the future, the partners we will find, and the cafe projects we might tackle, what I look forward to most are the times together, the kindness that’s shared in the workspaces, and the ways we might continue to evolve as a company to further foster sustainability for our employees and connection with everyone with whom we come into contact.
We’re already in September, which means we’re planning for 2023 in earnest. In the coming couple of months we’ll do our annual benefit review, we’ll craft our annual budget, and we’ll build our plans for reinvestment. There are some really fun projects on the table, and we’ve planned a lot of work to further our impact as B-Corp. Even as those things move forward, I wanted to be able to hear from each of you – What is on your wishlist for SCC in 2023? Is there equipment you wish your team had? Is there a particular benefit that you think would really care for our employees? Is there anything about how we operate or how your team operates that you’d like to see change? Anything here is fair-game. Just click this link and submit your feedback/ideas in this form. I (and our Teams & People Team) will read each of the submissions. We need you to help shape our path forward. (As a bonus, we’ll randomly select a respondent to win a Baratza Encore Grinder or $100 gift card. The winner gets to choose.) https://forms.gle/sLPJ3uxKWZN1KF3aA
Now, what’s currently happening at SCC…
CUSTOMER REFERRAL PROGRAM – I’ve mentioned this in previous company updates – we’ve been working on a program to allow customers to share SCC with their friends and family. Unfortunately, it’s a pretty complex program to build. Each time we thought we were close to launching this, we’ve had problems with some coding that have set us back. We will not turn this on for customers until we are very sure it works the way it’s supposed to, so we still do not have a formal launch date.
OCONOMOWOC REMODEL – After we finished our Shorewood project this summer we began planning to do a similar remodel to the OCN cafe. We’re finishing up the design and starting to bid this out with contractors. We hope to be able to accomplish this work in January and early-February. I love seeing these spaces that have been a big part of these communities for so long get the upgrades they need.
NOVEMBER WORKSHOPS – Usually we would host our tri-annual learning workshops in October. However, due to some scheduling needs, we’re going to be hosting these the first two weeks of November. We plan to hold these with 2 or 3 teams at a time in work spaces across the company. We’ll spend time sharing and discussing in detail the company plans for 2023, then we’ll have a dedicated coffee learning session (which should be tons of fun). Our group time will last 1.5 hours, then teams will 30 minutes together with your team leaders to review a team-specific agenda as we prepare for holidays. I’m really looking forward to seeing you all in person for these, especially as we welcome lots of new people onto our team this fall.
ALL THE RESERVES – 2022 has been an all-time year for great coffees rolling through SCC. We had three different geisha coffees. In previous years we’ve gotten one per year, at most. Even though we’re not bringing any more of those gems in for 2022, we have a great natural Costa Rican coffee coming two week – Jasmine Vale. Then, in late October, we’ll be dropping two exceptionally cool Reserve coffees from Panama. Intrinsic Cherry & Static Cherry. Static Cherry will actually be a DECAF Reserve to go alongside the super-juicy, effervescent Intrinsic Cherry offering. I can say without hesitation that Static Cherry is the best decaf I’ve ever tasted. We’re only getting 150 pounds of that particular coffee, so it won’t be around long at all. Alongside these, our small batch offerings are absolute fire. In September we’re dropping Wild Peach Ethiopia, which tastes like it sounds, before we roll out Black Honey Costa Rica in October. We all love those honey-process coffees, and this one slaps. Big thanks to Riley and Eric for getting these for us. We have lots of yummy brews in our future.
PRODUCT LIFE-CYCLE & EVOLVING OUR MERCH – Our P & I team has been busy planning for the future of our merchandise line. We’re built a system for tracking the life-cycle of each of the products we sell. As we move forward we will be prioritizing items produced by other B-Corps, items made from recycled and recyclable materials, and organic products. We will be using a new sticker system to help tell this story to our customers. We will also lay out all the information we have about all of the products we source on our website. Big thanks to Harmony for leading this, and Val for helping get this on our website in the coming months. Alongside that work Angeline and Kim have been working to dial-in our design aesthetics for our merch, so you’ll see a bit of an updated feel to a lot of what we produce in the next year. I’m really thrilled with where these projects are headed, and it’s been a joy to work with the squad.
I know each team faces challenges and projects each day to keep our spaces beautiful and deliver remarkable care to our customers. I know a lot of this work doesn’t necessarily get seen. Whether it’s our Tech team sweeping by the dumpsters, or our bakers dealing with a dishwasher or mixer that won’t cooperate, or our cafe teams having to clean the bathrooms multiple times per day, or our accounting team trying to get checks and invoices out on time every week. Each of you shows up to work to do your part, and only when that happens is SCC the special place it has become. So thank you for everything.
I will be visiting each cafe over the next couple of weeks, so I’m looking forward to seeing many of you soon! As always, don’t hesitate to reach out if there is anything I can do for you.
