CoCo Reflections from Aaron Johnson:
- This Week’s CoCo: Speak Up
- Speak up is a core commitment that I think makes Stone Creek very welcoming and a special place. To me, it encourages me to speak for what I want or need or even for what others may need. I love the speak up commitment because it makes it okay to bring new ideas to the table or to even halt an idea to stop and re-evaluate. A perfect example for me is when the Bayview cafe was closing. Originally the plan for me was to transfer to a different location and continue to work as a barista. This was fine as I knew that my personal goals had me in a kitchen in the future but not immediately. But I spoke up about the opportunity and ended up getting into a kitchen to learn and grow sooner than I thought possible. There was a time where I almost caved in and just went to a different cafe, sacrificing taking a risk and starting on my culinary journey. Instead, I spoke up to the right people and we worked together to get me one step closer to my dream and goals. I am very thankful that I made that choice now and I can honestly say it is one of the best decisions I’ve made was to speak up about my feelings and the direction I wanted to go. I encourage you to do the same for yourself and speak up knowing that the people that surround us at stone creek care to listen.
- Next Week’s CoCo: Speak to the Future, Not to the Past
- Speak to the future, not the past is a core commitment I use day in and day out. I’ve just recently started to use it in my role in the kitchen as I am always making new things and learning new cooking techniques, which naturally comes with some mistakes and errors. Nobody is perfect and everyone will make mistakes, but it’s how you recover from them. To me, this commitment is embodied by when something happens like a busy rush or I make a mistake, to remind myself to not dwell over the mistake and think about it for the next hour, because it will lead to more mistakes and a lot of stress. Instead, I try to remind myself to think about what I can do next time to avoid making that mistake? What can I do differently? This allows me and the team to grow and learn. Then, the next time, you can avoid making that mistake and dealing with the stress and whatever comes with it. Speaking to the future and not dwelling on the past is something that helps you grow and applies inside and outside of work.
CoCo Heroes:
- Speak Up: Our “Speak Up” Core Commitment Hero comes from the Oconomowoc cafe – Celeste Bayer! Celeste absolutely crushes. “Speak Up” in our retail team. Celeste takes concerns, hot/not, cafe needs, etc. to Employee Council meetings and is always asking the necessary follow-up questions all with the intent for a positive outcome/change/explanation. She lets her coach know when she has ideas to improve efficiency on floors and how to improve the checklist. Celeste is a perfect role model for “Speak Up” to everyone around her!
- Speak to the Future, Not to the Past: Our “Speak to the Future” Core Commitment Hero comes from the Glendale cafe – Jocelyn Marin! Jocelyn always has a positive attitude whenever she’s in cafe and always looks at every interaction she has as a learning experience for the future. She has blended in well with the team and hasn’t missed a step even during rushes! And when she does have a moment where she needs help she doesn’t complain or focus on the negative. Instead she just takes everything in stride and gets ready for the next challenge, which she more often than not crushes! Thanks for all your hard work and the positivity you bring to the team Jocelyn!

Going-Ons:
- New Sweet Foam Recipe: Riley, Drew, and Hailey wanted to send a very big “THANK YOU” to everyone who raised their hands to share ideas about the Sweet Foam recipe. We heard speak ups in NSL Workshops, employee surveys, and from individuals through emails, and in-person. In response to the sheer volume of comments, this team sped up the plan to review this recipe, did some homework, and developed a recipe that will undoubtedly CRUSH IT! We look forward to launching Sweet Foam “2.0” on June 2nd with the rest of our Summer Drinks. Please look for the recipe guide and video guide coming to your cafes with the Summer Drink Launch materials, and be sure to practice making a few and tasting them before launch.

Wins & Shout-outs:
A SHOUT-OUT FROM CUSTOMER CARE – Recently, Keegan Kasten helped out a customer find a poster that they really liked in our Tosa cafe. The customer sent an awesome email praising her customer service. Thanks for creating Remarkable Care, Keegan!
A SHOUT-OUT FROM EDUCATION – Kai Flores recently hosted a factory tour for 7th graders from a local middle school. To prepare for that tour, Kai spent time researching Colombian coffees, coffee culture, and growing regions and terroirs. The class and teacher were blown away by Kai’s presentation, care, and passion for coffee. It was a remarkable tour! Way to go, Kai!
A SHOUT-OUT FROM EDUCATION – Silken Bayer recently got this review from one of her tour attendees! “My wife and I took their factory tour which I recommend, it’s fun and interesting, plus we got a bunch of free stuff. Not sure how [to] spell our tour guide’s name, but it’s pronounced “Silken” and she was outstanding, I think the best tour guide I’ve ever had – super friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. Nice atmosphere as well, will stop by again when I’m in the area.” – Thanks, Silken!
A SHOUT-OUT FROM EDUCATION – Barista Educators! – Ali, Hannah, and Joe spend a lot of time, energy and care creating a space for retail, wholesale, and public class baristas to “Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!” During our monthly Educator Meetings I am inundated with new ideas and careful feedback as well as passion for and excitement around coffee and education. I want to thank them for their dedication to training our Retail folks to become coffee professionals. If any of these folks have played a role in your development here at Stone Creek Coffee, please share a “thank you!” next time you see them or send them a Hero Card. Let them know how they’ve impacted you.
A SHOUT-OUT FROM KAREN – Downer Cafe & Kitchen have both broken records in April (over 4k customers that month), which is the earliest month we’ve ever reached 4k customers since we opened in 2018! Additionally, over $12k in kitchen food sales for the first time ever in W3! Both cafe and kitchen are doing a great job remaining urgent to our customers and preparing for our busiest, best summer yet. Also, Downer Cafe & Kitchen’s 4-year anniversary is on May 25! Way to go, Downer teams!
