Hey SCC Team, I hope you all are doing well. This spring has been an amazing season for customer count recovery along with some really solid coffees in our cups. I’ve been jamming on the Peaberry PNG and Oak Barrel. I really like those two coffees, and I’m thrilled that we will have THREE different Reserve geisha coffees hitting SCC this summer. Lots of great sips to keep us fueled-up as we work to keep up with our growth. Bonus: the weather forecast for next week is A+++.
In today’s update I wanted to share information on the following:
- Employee Satisfaction Survey
- Shorewood Remodel
- Bakery Work
- Coffee Line Changes
- Referral Program
- Company Training on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in June Workshops
EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION SURVEY – Big thanks to those of you who have already filled out this survey. We do this twice a year, and it’s always incredibly helpful for prioritizing our work. We learn so much from employees who provide detailed feedback about their work experiences through this survey. If you have not already, please take 5 minutes to fill this out! https://forms.gle/U2MkffBzHZCak3KZ6
SHOREWOOD REMODEL – I’m very excited to announce that all of the planning work for the Shorewood remodel has been completed. We will be conducting this remodel throughout the month of June, and we will reopen after the 4th of July weekend. Big thanks to Eric, Joshua, Harmony, and Val for all of their work up to this point. I also want to thank the Shorewood team for their flexibility over the next few months as they work temporarily in other cafes.
BAKERY WORK – As customer counts have grown this year, so have our food sales. The bakery team has been working hard to keep up. Last week they worked out of an off-site bakery while we refinished the floor in the Bakery at The Factory. Over the next 6 weeks I will be partnering with our Bakery Manager, Selena, and each member of that team to help strengthen our training and day-to-day operations.
COFFEE LINE CHANGES – Our coffee team is getting ready to roll out some adjustments to our coffee line over the summer. These adjustments have been inspired by customer and employee feedback. It all starts with the launch of our small sample bag program that will support our retail experience and our online sales. This program will allow customers to sample any coffee beans at minimal cost to them. The new sample bags look great, and I’m eager to see how they impact customer behavior. Then, in early June we will be discontinuing Decaf Green Bike and will replace it with a rotating seasonal decaf coffee. The first edition of this coffee is a Peruvian selection we’re calling “Very Cherry Moped.” Shout out to Angeline for the killer design on this coffee and for geeking out with me about cult-classic movies. We finalize changes to the line in late August when we’ll discontinue some other lower-performing coffees. These are: Classic French, Ring of Fire Guatemala, and Carnival Brazil. At that point we’ll launch rotating light and dark seasonals to go along with our standard medium seasonal coffees. At the end of the year I plan to report back to everyone on how these changes are performing. Everything is iterative. #neverstoplearning
CUSTOMER REFERRAL PROGRAM – The other big launch we’re working on this season is our new customer referral program. This will be entirely digital and will allow SCC customers to refer their friends to SCC with a discount code. This code will work for both online orders and cafe orders and will allow us to track how many new customers we’re adding through the program. We’re just finishing up the computer code that will integrate this program with our two systems (stonecreekcoffee.com & Square). I was hoping this would be ready in early May, but we’re currently targeting June to roll this out.
COMPANY TRAINING ON DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION – As a B Corp we continue our work to make SCC a better part of the community, and a better employer. We now have good measurement methods in place to track our performance as we seek to become an even more diverse workplace. Our next step is to implement training for all of our employees about how each of us can contribute to a safe and supportive workplace for everyone. We will begin taking new employees through our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion class in June. We will also utilize our June Learning Workshops to take all existing employees through the training. You can expect to hear from the Teams & People team very soon regarding the schedule and agenda for these workshops. We will be hosting these at the Factory, and they will be roughly 3 hours in duration. A group of employees took a test-version of this class a couple of weeks ago. It was very engaging and provided a forum for very healthy group discussion that I believe will help each of us grow in and out of work. Stay tuned!
There is a lot of other great work happening across the teams right now. We will be in local Kroger-owned (Roundy’s) grocery stores starting this summer. We just completed our 2021 Impact Report and will promptly begin working on 2022. You can expect physical copies of this report to come to cafes very soon. We just extended our line of Steeped coffee offerings. We have a $55 5-Pound promo happening over Memorial Day weekend, which should be huge. We’re also working on the possibility for table-side and/or kiosk-based ordering through our app partner tools in select stores.
I’m hopeful and fairly confident that all of this work will continue to strengthen our business financially so we can continue to deepen our investments in our people and our spaces. Thank you all for your partnership in this! Don’t forget to fill out the survey I mentioned above! Have a great weekend!
