CoCo Reflections from Meghan Gross:
- This Week’s CoCo: Prepare For Your Work
- This week’s core commitment is one that is so expansive that it can become easy to simply not recognize whenever we accomplish it. Preparing for your work can mean so many different things to different people. For me personally, I try to keep up to date on launches and company info by reading the Weekly Recap when it comes out and checking our group chat to make sure I’m caught up on team news. On the other hand, preparing for your work also pertains to how you mentally get ready for your day as a whole. For me personally, I know that I have to be in a good mindset going into my day in order to not be totally drained afterwards. I also know that sometimes I can be pretty crabby before I’ve had my coffee (that’s the occupational hazard of working at a coffee shop). So, I just make sure to get my shift drink before customers make their way into the cafe so that I’m a bit more ready for my day. Prepare For Your Work really just means that you spend a few moments making sure that you are ready to get through your day to the best of your ability.
- Next Week’s CoCo: Speak Up
- Speak Up has been a bit of a difficult CoCo for me to really reign in during my time as Stone Creek since I tend to have a lot of opinions on how I believe that things should be done and I’m also a bit of a control freak sometimes, as some of my fellow Downer baristas have probably noticed. It is easy enough to put your opinions into the conversation once you feel comfortable doing so. The challenge came into play for me when I really had to learn how to use the communication structure at Stone Creek to speak with different folks about different things. Something I’ve learned in my time here is that basically every single person at SCC is very willing to help out with anything, but in order for everyone to be able to run their own ships up to code, so to speak, we need some sort of structure for our words. I have needed to learn who to speak up to, when to speak up, what methods would be most appropriate to use in order to bring ideas to the table, etc. Every person’s opinion is so valuable at SCC, even if you are a brand new barista and may not feel very confident bringing up issues or asking questions, please just know that your opinions and thoughts are SO very important and appreciated. The best tool to help ourselves and others solve problems is having the ability to communicate effectively with the correct people in each individual circumstance. We are able to grow strongest when everyone actively participates in discussions and isn’t afraid to voice their opinions and speak up!
CoCo Heroes:
- Prepare For Your Work: Our “Prepare For Your Work” Core Commitment Hero comes from the Oconomowoc team – Keegan Kasten! She has been emboding “Prepare for Your Work” since the first day she started at Stone Creek! She arrives to all shifts a minimum of 15 minutes early, she comes prepared with questions to NSL workshops and team meetings, she is attentive to the weekly recap and team updates, created a neat notebook system with her barista training manual while she was preparing for her CERT test, and always checks that meeting links/wifi is working properly before her virtual meetings. We can’t wait to hear about how she crushes this COCO in the Office as a Customer Care team member!
- Speak Up: Our “Speak Up” Core Commitment Hero comes from the Glendale cafe team – Chloe Drapes! She is never afraid to think hard and speak up on how to best care for her team. She speaks up on a number of topics ranging from coffee quality to work flow to how we can best take care of our space. She’s more than willing to share her immense knowledge of coffee and this helps make sure that customers who come in are getting the best products that SCC has to offer. As her coworker, it’s a pleasure knowing that she’s taking care to observe and speak up at work! It lets me know she cares about her work. Thanks Chloe!
Going-Ons:
- Black History Month: In recognition of these important days, we will be matching employee donations to organizations working for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion through the end of the month. For every dollar you give to an organization, we will give two more to that same org. Simply send proof of your donation to teams@stonecreekcoffee.com!
- February NSL Workshops: Our next round of NSL Workshops are scheduled for the end of this month! These will be VIRTUAL. Please reach out to your Team Leader or Teams in advance if you need support accessing your Virtual Workshop. Our goal for this round of workshops is twofold:
- 1. As you know, we recently received our certification as a B Corporation. We are aware that many of you may not be familiar with what a B Corp is and how this certification will serve us moving forward. So, we want to spend time explaining this certification and the implications it has for how we run Stone Creek Coffee now and into the future.
- 2. The last two years have been very difficult for most people. The social and personal effects of COVID have been far-reaching. We’ve all faced situations that we didn’t know how to handle. Many of us have been more isolated from friends and family. Our mental health and physical wellness may have suffered. So, we want to discuss that a bit together and share some thoughts and frameworks that may be helpful for you in living the life you want in the midst of the difficult times we all have come through and the challenges we still face.
- Workshop Scheduling Details: This month, our workshops will be scheduled earlier in the day, and all team members will be scheduled based on their availability in Paycor. This means you’ll get to see more coworkers from other teams! We will not close cafes early for these workshops. Session times are as follows:
- Tuesday 2/22: 9:30am – 11am & 2:30pm – 4pm
- Thursday 2/24: 9:30am – 11am & 2:30pm – 4pm
- Team Members: Check on the 2/7 schedule for what was published. If you have any questions about your scheduled workshop session, please reach out to your Team Leader.
- Team Leaders: Your team members should have been scheduled for this on the schedule on 2/7. Remember to project this time as Training in your labor reporting document. Leaders, if you have any questions or need help swapping sessions for your team member(s), please reach out to Anna Oehlrich and Karen Strange ASAP. If you need to swap sessions for your team member(s), please complete this swap in the Paycor schedule.
- Office Peeps: Office Team have been sent Google Invites for all sessions. Simply accept the one you’ll make and decline the ones you won’t. Can’t make one of these session? Email Teams.
Wins & Shout-outs:
-
- A Hero Shout-out: The Downer Kitchen wants to shout-out Abigail Lane! As you probably know, we had our floors done this past week at Downer and Abby was literally there every single day we needed to move equipment, clean, or set up our space to be ready for the next day. She created remarkable care for our customers by creating a clean space for them. She also was the first one to step up to help out when the times were switched around. Thanks Abigail!
- Did you know that we have an Employee Celebration Committee? If you have a teammate that you’d like to recognize and celebrate or if you’d like to plan a team event, please email the Employee Celebration Committee at Celebrations@stonecreekcoffee.com. We’d love to help!
- If you want to publicly shout-out a teammate or something really cool that happened in your workspace, email Val (vnewhouse@stonecreekcoffee.com) to include your “Win” in the next Employee Newsletter!
