The Impact of a Relationship - 2/1/2006

Part 2 In a Series on Socially Conscious Coffee

In our last post, I introduced readers to Stone Creek's new partnership with Socially Conscious Coffee, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing education, healthcare, opportunity, and support to the families and neighbors of coffee harvesters in Brazil.

The school provides free education and literacy programs directly to the workers who grow and harvest Café Conquista coffee and to their families.  The Healthcare Center, due to open within two years, will provide this community with medical care and a heightened understanding of the importance of hygiene and nutrition.

In the coffee industry, Café Conquista is referred to as a 'relationship coffee.'

By purchasing this coffee directly from the farm on which it is grown, Stone Creek has committed itself to providing the growers and harvesters with a sustainable living wage and access to necessary social amenities, something which many Brazilian communities lack.

This relationship not only provides benefits to the coffee growers, but it also provides benefits to Stone Creek in the form of an honest, transparent business model, a consistent product, and a visible demonstration of our commitment to social responsibility.

Relationship coffee also allows the consumer to purchase coffee with the knowledge that their purchase is ensuring the sustainability of the small, independent coffee grower.

Café Conquista Brazilian coffee is currently blended in our Espresso and Full City blends, and will soon find a permanent niche as the featured coffee in our Community Coffee program.

The members of the first graduating class received their diplomas in December 2005, and every student finished with an 85% or better.
