Last Friday, we held our bi-weekly blind
taste-testing (called "cupping" in coffeespeak). This week's theme was Sumatran
coffees. Altogether, we cupped three Sumatras, including our current Sumatra, a
new Sumatra, and a new Organic Sumatra coffee. We also cupped a Zimbabwe AA
coffee as we explore some ideas for new blends.
The eight of us scored all the Sumatras as good to slightly above
average coffees. Our current Sumatra coffee scored the best,
garnering a 7.5 out of 10. The new Organic Sumatra received an overall 6.8
score, while the new Sumatra received a 6.1. The new Sumatra particularly
divided people--some really like it and gave it an 8, while others really
disliked it and gave it 3 or 4.
We were consistent in our rating of the Zimbabwe AA--we thought it was o.k.
and gave it a 6.1. Not quite a strong enough showing to work its way into
the lineup.
So, it looks like we're sticking with our current Sumatra and still
looking for varietals to use in creating some fun new blends.
