Learning the Q - 9/10/2010

A few weeks ago, Eric and I completed Q Grader Training in St. Paul, MN. Q Graders are professional cuppers accredited by the Coffee Quality Institute (www.coffeeinstitute.org). Over the course of 5 days, we received instruction and took tests in 22 sections of coffee related subjects such as green coffee grading, roast identification, coffee cupping, sensory skills and sensory triangulation. We also completed a 100 point written exam on general coffee knowledge.

The experience and the amount of education that we received was phenomenal. We cupped coffee after coffee and experienced what it’s like to have your taste and smell senses thoroughly overloaded. Now, I am excited to bring our knowledge back and use this new experience to continue our efforts to improve our coffees and education.
