SCC's Compost Coffee Project - 4/9/2010
Posted By:   Christie Boivin

On Monday, April 12, we will launch our Compost Coffee bins in our stores for the third year running! This project has been a great success and we have an avid following of folks who use our used coffee grounds to aid their gardens! These green bins are located at our Glendale, Whitefish Bay, Shorewood, Bay View, Wauwatosa, Delafield and Oconomowoc locations. If you are one of these folks who use our grounds, please send us your coffee compost story and photos to cboivin@stonecreekcoffee.com. We would love to hear how coffee grounds are helping your garden grow!

Here’s a little information about coffee and composting:

Every day across America, Asia and Europe, millions of pots of coffee and tea are brewed, and the millions of pounds of wet grounds, filters and bags are thrown in the trash. The grounds from coffee are rich in many vitamins and minerals and is proven to work as an excellent, environmentally safe way in composting and gardening.

The benefits of using coffee grounds:
-Coffee grounds help hold moisture in the ground
-The coffee grounds add a nitrogen boost to your compost pile that can start the composting process and helps break down carbon-rich materials (woody plant stems, crumpled paper or cardboard).
-NO CHEMICALS ADDED! like harsh fertilizers. It is environentally friendly and safe.

TIPS:

-For a gentle, fast-acting fertilizer, sprinkle the used coffee grounds directly into the soil in flower and vegetable gardens.
-Dilute with water:
*Outdoor plants: 1 part coffee/ 2 parts water
*Indoor plants: 1 part coffee/4 parts water
-For Composting use: add the coffee grounds and filters to your compost pile.
